The eclectic flavor profile, recipes, and menu conceived and created by Alexander Smalls and Executive Chef Joseph “JJ” Johnson is an eatable culinary conversation celebrating the foodways of the African Diaspora, a result of the forced migration of African slaves throughout the five major continents of the world from Africa to Asia, Europe, North and South America.
Resilient African people worked the land, farming and creating a legacy of food preparation and hospitality throughout the world while infusing African traditions and history in every dish.
At The Cecil, we have taken this rich history and created a culinary discipline that we call Afro-Asian-American cooking, a bold cuisine in praise of the extraordinary contribution of these ancestors.
